Samaresh Majumdar is a famous Indian Bengali novelist. His writings mainly focus on North Bengal. He is famous for his ‘Animesh’ series of novels and secondly ‘Kalbela’ for which he won Sahitya Akademi prize in 1984. This writer is also well-known for his creative character ‘Detective Arjun’, who is the focused character of the film ‘Arjun – Kalimpong E Sitaharan’ (2013). He published a Novel titled ‘Buno Haansh’ in Pujabarshiki Anondolok. Later in 2014 based on this novel a Bengali film ‘Buno Haansh’ was released. He has also written many popular TV serials.
Samaresh Majumdar was born on March 10, 1942, in West Bengal, India. He spent his childhood time in the Dooars tea garden, Gairkata in Jalpaiguri district. He completed his primary education in Jalpaiguri Zila High School. Samaresh Majumdar got his graduation degree from Scottish Church College in Kolkata and a post-graduation degree from Kolkata University. He worked in Ananda Bazar Prakashana, a major publication house in Kolkata.
He was fond of Group Theatre very much. By writing a story ‘Onnomatra’ for a stage drama he started his writing career. Later in 1976, his first Desh published his first novel ‘Dour’. Besides, he also worked upon the short story, travel story, and teenage novels.
Samaresh Majumdar is a versatile writer though many of his novels have a touch of thrill and suspense and it is noticeable in his novels like ‘Aath Kuthuri Noy Daraja’, ‘Bandinibash’, ‘Daybadhha’, ‘Buno Haansher Palak’ etc. His remarkable novels are ‘Saatkahon’(most famous), ‘Tero Parbon’, ‘Uzan Ganga’, ‘Swapner bazaar’ and much more.
He achieved many national and international awards. He also got BFJA, Dishari and Chalachitra Prasar Samity award in 1982 for Best Script Writer. After that, Samaresh Majumdar received Bankim Puroshkar award for ‘Kolikatay Nobokumar’ in 2009. His Trilogy Uttoradhikar, Kalbela & Kalpurush is nowadays considered as a modern classic. He is one of the best writers in Bangla Literature.
Till date he is writing for Uttar Banga Sangbad, a leading Newspaper publishes from North Bengal named ‘Soja Sapta’.
