Satyajit Ray

Satyajit Ray is from a family of arts and literature. His father Sukumar Ray was also a legendary creative writer. Additionally, his grandfather Upendrakishore Ray was also a writer and philosopher. Satyajit Ray was a writer, director, producer, lyricist, screenwriter, music composer, calligrapher, and illustrator. He was one of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century.

Early Life

Satyajit Ray born in Calcutta on May 2, 1921, in the lap of Sukumar Ray and Suprabha Ray. He was the only son in his family. Sukumar Ray, his father died when he was only three. It was very hard to run the with meager earnings of his mother Suprabha ray.

Satyajit Ray, complete his high school at Ballygunge Government High School and complete BA in Economics at Presidency College Calcutta. Then he studied at Visva Bharati University at Shantiniketan founded by Rabindranath Tagore. There he learned much from the famous painter Nandalal Bose and Benode Behari Mukherjee.

Career

Satyajit Ray started his career at an advertising agency named D.J. Keymer in 1943. Then he worked for Signet Press a publishing house founded by D.K. Gupta. Later with Chidananda Dasgupta and others, he founded the Calcutta Film Society in 1947. They also screened may foreign films. Satyajit Ray chooses Pather Panchali a piece of literature written by Bibhutibhusan Bandapadhay as his basis of his first film. In 1955 this film released with popular success. He also made “Aparajito”, “Apur Sangsar”, “Charulata”, “Heerak Rajar Deshe”, “Teen Kanya” etc. Every film he made bring him a huge success. He made total 37 films.

Satyajit Ray also left his mark on literature. He was the creator of famous detective character named “Feluda” and a scientist character named “Professor Shanku”. He wrote many science fictions, thriller, detective stories and also many short stories. “Apur Panchali”, “Banku Babur Bandhu”, “My Years With Apu: A Memoir” etc some of his famous books. He wrote 35 stories about Feluda.

Satyajit Ray earned many awards in his life for his work. He got 32 National Film Award, Golden Lion for Aparajito, Silver Bear for best director etc. Moreover, he got the Honorary Oscar in 1992 for lifetime achievement.

Personal Life

Satyajit married Bijoya Ray. They had a son Sandip Ray who is also a filmmaker.

Death

In 1992 Satyajit Ray’s health became bad for heart complication. This legend died on April 23, 1992, at the age of 71.
