John Oliver

John Oliver is a British comedian, political commentator, television host, and occasional actor. He is best known for The Daily Show with Trevor Noah (1996), John Oliver: Terrifying Times (2008) and The Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear (2010). Oliver left The Daily Show at the end of 2013, and began presenting his own show on HBO, in: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, April 27, 2014. He also makes podcast The Bugle with Andy Zaltzman.

John Oliver was born in Erdington, a suburb of Birmingham, and educated in Bedford at the Mark Rutherford School. He grew up in Liverpool and Bedford. He has English and Irish ancestry. On his father’s side, he is the grandson of Osborne George Oliver, an electricity board official, and Charlotte Hester Girdlestone, a religious education adviser. As a young boy, Oliver dreamed of one day becoming a professional football player. Oliver attended Christ’s College at the University of Cambridge to study English. He found his niche when he met Richard Ayoade, a fellow Cambridge student.

In 2008, Oliver was given his first film role, playing Dick Pants in The Love Guru. He later voiced Vanity Smurf in The Smurfs film and its sequel.

Oliver met, Kate Norley, when he was covering the 2008 Republican Convention for The Daily Show with Trevor Noah (1996). Norley, an Army veteran who served as a medic in the Iraq War, was there with a group called Vets for Freedom. He married Kate Norley in 2011.

Currently, he is residing permanently in the United States and lives in New York.
