Nelson Mandela was a South African politician. He served as the President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black President of South Africa. Nelson Mandela was one of the greatest men in history. He mainly fought against racism, poverty and Social Inequality during his life. He is without any doubt an icon for humanity.
Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July 1918. He was born in a village called Mvezo in Cape Province. He was born as Rolihlahla Mandela. He was later known by his clan name Madiba. Nelson Mandela was born to Gadla Mphakanyiswa. His father was the local chief of his village. Gadla was polygamist and had four wives. He loved African history as a child. He attended a Methodist school. At the age of 16 he was ritually circumcised. The ritual signifies the transition from a boy to man. Nelson Mandela then joined a college to get a Bachelor’s degree. But due to a situation he was suspended. He left without getting a degree. After that Nelson Mandela moved to Johannesburg. There he worked as a night guard. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in 1943. He later started his law studies. Soon after that he was fighting against racism in South Africa. He was accused of treason. He was arrested in 1956. He was released due to Martial Law. The trial for the case ended with the Verdict of Not Guilty. He was arrested in 1962. Since then he has been moved from one prison to another. He was released in 1990 from prison. He completed LLB degree from prison. In 1994 Nelson Mandela was elected as the President of South Africa. He was the first black chief executive of South Africa. He held the position until 1999.
Nelson Mandela lived a simple life. He donated one third of his annual income to Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.
Nelson Mandela was married three times. Nelson Mandela married his third wife Graça Machel in 1988. He married her on his 80th birthday. Nelson Mandela had six children and 17 grandchildren. He was friends with Michael Jackson and Queen Elizabeth. He was known to have a good sense of humor. He died on 5 December 2013 due to respiratory infection.
