Bernard “Bernie” Sanders is an American politician, serving as the junior United States Senator from Vermont since 2007. Bernard Sanders was born on September 8, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York City. Sanders is the longest-serving independent in U.S. congressional history. He has always caucused with the Democratic Party, which has entitled him to committee assignments and at times given Democrats a majority.
Sanders studied at Brooklyn College for a year in 1959–60 before transferring to the University of Chicago and graduating with a bachelor of arts degree in political science in 1964. He has described himself as a mediocre college student because the classroom was “boring and irrelevant,” while the community provided his most significant learning.
Sanders is a self-described socialist, democratic socialist, and progressive who admires the Nordic model of social democracy and is a proponent of workplace democracy.
