Saravanan Sivakumar, better known by his stage name Suriya is an Indian film actor, producer, philanthropist and television presenter, whose working in the Tamil film industry.

Suriya was born to Sivakumar (famous Tamil actor Sivakumar) and his wife Lakshmi in Chennai in 1975. But he brought up in Coimbatore. He is the eldest of three children – younger brother being the award-winning actor Karthik Sivakumar, and a younger sister named Brindha Sivakumar.

Surya is married to Jyothika Saravanan on September 11, 2006, a popular Tamil actress. They were blessed with two children, a daughter on August 10, 2007, named Diya and after 3 years a son on June 7, 2010, named Dev.

Before his career in films, Suriya worked at a garment exports factory for eight months. To avoid nepotism, he did not reveal himself to his boss as Sivakumar‘s son, but his boss ultimately learned the truth himself.

Suriya has acted in about 30 films in various genres as a lead actor. Suriya debuted in the 1997 film Nerukku Ner directed by Vasanth and produced by Mani Ratnam. He made a commercially successful cinematic debut in Vasanth‘s Nerrukku Ner (1997). This was followed by roles in a series of critical and commercial failures, including Kaadhale Nimmadhi (1998), Sandhippoma (1998) and Periyanna (1999). Suriya collaborated with Vasanth again in Poovellam Kettuppar (1999).

He has been the ambassador for many famous enterprises including TVS, Aircel and Sunfeast since 2006.

Suriya and his family have also extended help towards the education of Sri Lankan Tamil children on behalf of the Sivakumar Charitable Trust. He is also an active participant in other humanitarian works such as “Save The Tigers” campaign, which aids in the protection and preservation of Tigers in India, and “REACH”, a non-profit that cures TB patients for free using supervised medication programs. The actor celebrates every birthday by doing charity work across Tamil Nadu.
