Rosy Afsari

Rosy Afsari also known as Rosy Samad, was was an actress in the Bangladeshi film industry. A prolific actress of a period that is often referred to as the ‘golden era’ of Bangladeshi cinema, she is best known for her roles in films like Shurjo Grahan, Shurjo Shangram, Jibon Thekey Neya and Titas Ekti Nadir Naam.  She was awarded the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress in its very first ceremony in 1975 for her role in the film Lathial, besides numerous other awards.

In her career spanning over four decades, Rosy has acted in over 200 films. Some of her hit films are Joarbhata, Etotuku Asha, Neel Akasher Nichey, Lathial, Oshikkhito, Bela Shesher Gaan and Protikar. Her performances in films targeted towards a more mature audience were highly praised. Her unique presence was often the main object of interest in these films. 

Rosy started her film career in 1964 with the film Eito Jibon.  She appeared in a major role in Zahir Raihan’s Sangam (1964), the first color feature film in Pakistan. She also produced and directed several films and earned numerous national film awards throughout her career. 

With her inimitable presence on the screen, she made decisive contributions to the films in which she appeared. She acted in many successful films that combined drama, light-hearted emotions and social messages. She may have secluded herself from the silver screen years ago, due to predominance of obscenity in the film industry, but the spirit of her performance in films like Jibon Thekey Neya and Titas Ekti Nodir Naam will always keep her memory alive in the psyche of generations of cine-goers.

Rosy Afsari has been suffered to kidney disease for several years. She died on March 9, 2007.
