Mamta Sharma

Mamta Sharma is an Indian playback singer. When it comes to naming popular item singers of contemporary India, the name of Mamta Sharma instantly come to the fore. She is widely regarded as the queen of item song who has the capability to spellbound song lovers instantly. She is known for the song Munni Badnaam Hui from Dabangg, starred Salman Khan. The song was super hit and fetched her several awards and nominations, including a Filmfare award for Best Playback Singer (Female).

Early Life

Mamta was born in Birla Nagar (Gwalior), Madhya Pradesh on 7th September 1980. She belongs to a conservative Brahman (upper caste Hindu) family. She completed her studies at Saint Paul’s School Morar Gwalior. In school, she actively performed on stage. Later she also performed at various family events (marriage receptions, parties) with her band. In fact, at the point of completing her schooling, she had become quite popular in the Gwalior region. There were lots of offers for her to perform on stage. She started to concentrate only on music and formed a band and started to accept offers for the stage show.

Career

Before singing for Bollywood, Bengali, she lent her voice to many Bhojpuri albums. She was spotted by music director Lalit Pandit who got her first break in a super hit movie, Dabangg, with the item song, Munni Badnaam Hui. She started singing in other Indian languages as well. She also has sung the super hit song Kevvu Keka in the Telugu remake of Dabangg, Gabbar Singh. She also made a special appearance in Dabangg 2.

After Dabangg, there is no looking back for Mamta. She is having the bundle of offers from Bollywood and other film industries of India. Apart from that, her demand for stage shows across India is only burgeoning. That is the power of melodious voice which can make anyone stand and dance.

Some of the other popular hits of Mamta Sharma include ‘Tinku Jiya’ (Yamla Pagla Deewana) and ‘Aa Re Pritam Pyaare’ (Rowdy Rathore). You can notice husky voice in all these songs which is unique to her.

Personal Life

Mamta Sharma is married and living in Mumbai with her husband. The name of her husband is Ashraf Ali. This was obviously a love marriage where a Brahmin girl was marrying a Muslim guy. Because of this marriage, her family broke all relations with her.

In 2005, Mamta Sharma became a paying guest in a house owned by none other than Ashraf Ali. Ashraf was a struggling lyricist, but quite rich with good connections in the music industry. He helped Mamta in organizing many successful stage shows. They started to date one year later and in 2011 got married.

It should be noted that Ashraf had written another famous item song ‘Fevicol Se’ from Dabangg 2. He has also written many songs and getting many projects in the Bollywood.

Needless to say, Mamta is no more a Hindu. She has converted to Islam after marriage. That was said to be the pre-condition of marriage put forth by Ashraf Ali family. It was however denied by Mamta who said that Ashraf never forced her for conversion and she did this on her own will.

She didn’t change her name after becoming a Muslim. This name has given her fame and people recognize her as Mamta Sharma.
