Joseph Cotten

Joseph Cotten was a famous Hollywood Actor of the 40’s. He appeared in many numerous films like Citizen Kane(1941), The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), Include Gaslight (1944), The Third Man (1949) etc.

Cotten born on 15 May 1905 in Virginia. He went to Washington DC and studied at the Hickman School of Expression. In 1924 he moved to New York in order to develop his new theater world, but he found it very tough there. As a result, he chose to become a shipping clerk for a year. He then went to Florida and started sorts of odd jobs one by one. But he liked to act in Miami Civic Theater there. There his works helped him to become an Assistant Stage Manager in New York.

After that, in 1930 Cotten started to work in radio shows. He married Lenore la Mont in 1931. He also continued to attend in auditions and stage performances. His way of life changed when he met Orson Welles. He joined the theater company of Orson Welles. There he appeared in leading roles in plays like ‘Shoemaker’s Holiday’ and ‘Julius Caesar’.

Cotten began to appear on the big screen in 1941. He appeared in Welles’ new film Citizen Kane which achieved huge success. Cotten won stardom overnight. Cotton found his finest roles in Welles’ films. They together appeared in The Magnificent Ambersons on 1942 and Journey into Fear in 1943. He later appeared in other films like Shadow of a Doubt (1943), The Third Man (1949) and Touch of Evil (1958).

From the 60’s he began to start his new life episode by appearing in TV reality shows. He appeared in TV shows like ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents’ and ‘20th Century Fox Hour’. After that, Joseph wrote his autobiography ‘Vanity Will Get You Somewhere’ and published it in 1987. He was suffering from cardiac disease short before his death.

Joseph Cotten died on 6 February in 1994 of pneumonia. He was one of the famous artists as a film actor and radio personality of the 60’s.
