He shares his father’s name. He has three sisters. Tom Cruise is of German, Irish and English ancestory. Spent his early teenage years living in Ottawa, Canada where his father was a diplomat. Was interested in hockey, but his fearful parents instead enrolled him in figure skating lessons. Originally, Tom Cruise wanted to be a priest, not an actor! Tom cruise grew up in poverty. In 1971 his family moved to Canada. He used to play floor hockey in school. His mother divorced his father and took him and his sisters back to the United States. His father later died of cancer. Tom Cruise went to 15 schools in 14 years. He played varsity football. But he was cut from the team after getting caught drinking beer before a game. Tom Cruise appeared in a bit part in Endless Love. His first big role came in Taps. He played a major supporting role in the film starring Sean Penn and Timothy Hutton. Tom Cruise then starred in Risky Business in 1983. It was his first hit. In 1986 Tom Cruise starred in Top Gun. The film turned him into a superstar. He played Maverick who was a fighter pilot. In 1990 he starred with Nicole Kidman in Days of Thunder. They again starred together in Far and Away. In 1994 he starred in the ensemble The Interview with the Vampire. The film also had upcoming superstars like Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas and Kristen Dunst. Tom Cruise starred as the spy Ethan Hunt in 1996 blockbuster Mission Impossible. That series has been his most successful series till date. The same year he also starred in Jerry McGuire.

Tom Cruise has been married three times. He first married Mimi Rogers in 1987. In 1990 Tom Cruise Married Nicole Kidman. They divorced in 2001. He then married his third wife Katie Holmes. The couple has a nine year old daughter. Tom Cruise also has two adoptive children. He believes in the Church of Scientology.
